Grange,
situated half-way between Aberdeen and Inverness, is an ideal base for a
holiday in the North East of Scotland. Its peace and tranquility
are appreciated by many people who have stayed in holiday
accommodation in the area.
There are beautiful, scenic walks to be had, and the picturesque seaside town of Cullen with its safe, sandy beaches is only ten minutes drive from the North of Grange. |
| This picturesque
rural North East Scotland parish is bordered on three sides by waterways,
the Isla to the South, the Aultmore burn to the West and the Shiel burn
to the East.
It is one of the largest Parishes of Banffshire, totalling 6.089 hectares in area, spanning 5 miles East to West and 6 miles North to South. The population peaked at 1909 in 1861, declined to 602 in 1981 and has risen to just above the thousand mark today. The dark silhouette of the wedge-shaped hill called the Knock, with its peat covered summit, is a well-known landmark in Grange, and may even be seen from the sea. |

The name Grange comes
from the Latin, "grangia", meaning farm or country and was
given to the area by the Monks of Kinloss.
The main industry in
Grange is, as in the past, agriculture, although there are also many
other types of small businesses in the area.
Nowadays there is one Church and one school in Grange although, in its heyday, there were three of each. A general store and post office were situated at the Crossroads, but are no longer in use. There was even a railway station in Grange, but this was closed in 1968 as part of the Beeching reforms. |
| In 1925 the magnificent
King Memorial Hall was gifted to the people of Grange, and is still
in regular use today.
One of the oldest structures in Grange is the old brig of Grange, straddling the Isla by Cantly. There is good fishing to be had by this bridge, which has to be crossed to gain access to the Grange Riding Centre. Nearby, on the A95 at the foot of the Ladyhill, is the war memorial, which is where the Ladywell, dedicated by a monk to the Virgin Mary, is to be found. |
